Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370613 AB OBJECTIVE: To investigate factors perceived to contribute to the sustainability of the local response to HIV/AIDS and sexual health in Bristol and District (B&D), a case study in the South West of England. METHODS: The method of inquiry was derived from the worldview of qualitative research and the emerging socioecological paradigm of health. Forty-eight key informants participated in face-to-face interviews and an organizational and community inventory. RESULTS: Qualitative analyses revealed leadership, healthy alliances, resource allocation, participation by the affected population, wider involvement and local targets for The Health of the Nation strategy to be among the perceived sustainability factors. The relationship between organizational variables and the importance of different factors for maintaining health, the priority of health in one's life and selected attitudinal statements was statistically analyzed. CONCLUSIONS: This case study generated an intergrated and interactive framework called Reorienting Organizations and Community to Sustain the AIDS Response. The framework suggests the need to combine behavioral and organizational interventions that involve community to sustain HIV/AIDS prevention and care efforts. The potential for this framework to assess and, or predict the sustainability of a local response to HIV/AIDS and sexual health should be tested in other environments.
